Product Review: Nature’s Recipe® Oven Baked Chewy Treats

product review nature's recipe treatsWe were once again asked by our friends at Chewy.com to review a product this month.  We chose Nature’s Recipe® Oven Baked Chewy Treats since Luna loves treats (who doesn’t, really?) and we are familiar with Nature’s Recipe Grain Free kibble (which Luna really liked).

Nature’s Recipe is a division of Del Monte Foods in San Francisco.  I’m sure you remember Del Monte; as a kid, I used to eat their canned fruit cocktail all the time.

Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Chewy Treats a chicken-based treat, with sweet potatoes and apples.  Chicken is listed as the first ingredient, followed by sugar, soy flour, dried potato, rolled oats, dried sweet potato, dried apple, glycerin, salt, natural flavor, garlic, citric acid, minerals, natural mixed tocopherols (a vitamin E compound), and rosemary extract.

The treats are soft, and are about a square inch, making it easy to break the treat into smaller pieces if you are using it as a training reward.

Luna loved these.  Any treat for which she will immediately sit is a yummy one.  Not only did she want another, she would have been content had I let her have the whole bag.

Luna loved these, so motivating her with these as a training treat would be a great idea.  I like that the chews are soft so they can be broken up into smaller pieces.  They didn’t smell “fake” or overprocessed like some other training treats we have tried.  The treats come in a resealable package, so we don’t have to worry about maintaining freshness once the bag is opened.  There are no fillers in this treat, such as corn or wheat, and there are no artificial colors or flavors added.  With Luna’s sensitive tummy, that is a big plus.  In addition to chicken, these come in venison and lamb.

The Cons

Sugar was the second ingredient in this treat.  Luna is a greyhound, which means that she is already behind the eight ball when it comes to dental issues.   Given sparingly as a “special treat” would probably be the only way I would give these to her.

Luna, however, is going through some GI issues, and this product will likely not work for her in the long run because we are moving her to a novel protein diet of duck.  That, however, is no reflection on this product whatsoever, but is due solely to Luna’s own particular gastric idiosyncrasies.
